Film festivals. Everybody knows of them. Every cinephile keeps up with them and at some point dreams of attending one of the bigger ones. Film festivals give us movie lovers our first exposure to the movies that will take over our theaters over the coming year. The bigger film festivals are to movies what E3 and TGS and such are to video games. They’re the events that the hardcore fans impatiently await every year to get the first glimpse at what will surely be the coming year’s biggest movies. On top of that, film festivals gives independent filmmakers a chance to reach a wider audience. Allowing the art of cinema to expand and the filmmaker’s work to be appreciated. That being said, here are what I feel to be the top three film festivals in the United States.

1. Sundance Film Festival

Sundance. This is THE premiere festival for independent films. This is the big boy that all filmmakers try to get their work into. Sundance, founded in 1978, is the biggest showcase there is for independent films. As such, many of the greater filmmakers got their big break by premiering at Sundance. Some of these directors include Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky, Kevin Smith, Paul Anderson and many more. Likewise, the festival premieres independent movies every year bringing them to a wider audience, and has resulted in bringing some of the biggest independent films to moviegoers attentions. Films such as Clerks, Saw, Reservoir Dogs, Precious, Moon, Little Miss Sunshine and the list goes on and on. The festival has grown to huge proportions, becoming something of a Hollywood extravaganza. Despite this, the Festival still does it’s part to cater to and help smaller filmmakers every year.

2. Tribeca Film Festival

Tribeca was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2002. This festival was founded in honor of the 9/11 attacks. Despite being one of the youngest festivals, Tribeca has managed to rapidly rise in prestige, becoming one of the most prominent film festivals in the world. Due to the immense success of the festive, Tribeca has become an important showcase and great opportunity for independent filmmakers to make a name for themselves. The offerings at Tribeca range from independent feature films to documentaries to short films, to even family films. In its short time, Tribeca has already been the spot where such films as Shrek Forever After, Freakonomics and Get Low. Having made such an impact on the industry in such little time, Tribeca is definitely one of the big boys and one to watch out for even more in the future.

3. Telluride Film Festival

Telluride started in 1974. There’s sort of a rule about the festival that says movies must premiere in North America to be eligible for submission to this festival. As such, they show many new films at Telluride. This results in many films getting their premiere at Telluride. The festival has premiered such movies as Roger and Me, El Mariachi, Brokeback Mountain, The Crying Game and many more. This year audiences even received a surprise premiere of 127 Hours starring James Franco and directed by Danny Boyle. It has been grounds for filmmakers to make a name for themselves and be a break out point for these filmmakers. Telluride is also well known and praised for its purity. Thus, making it one of the more respected festivals for being one of those so dedicated to the art of cinema.

Cinema 4D has a brand new application that will allow you to import a layered Photoshop ‘psd’ file, then map the individual layers in Z space. Currently, PlaneSmart is displayed on the home page of the Ciniversity Maxon web site with download option and installation instructions. Ciniversity is a great resource itself and has many tutorials and ‘goodies’ that are available to members and non members alike. When you download the PlaneSmart plugin, unzip the download and you will see a PlaneSmart folder that has Cinema library files. Go to the plugins directory of your Cinema 4D R12 installation and copy this entire folder to the plugins folder of your installation. I always copy new files sets like this to keep the original download in a discreet labeled location. If there are any issues later, any question about exactly what you downloaded, any updates, you will have the original to review and compare.

It’s fun just to import a few different Photoshop files just to see the layering and camera option effect. When you examine the project file that this import creates, you see the layers of your Photoshop file created as separate planes. The plane objects in turn, have materials applied and if you view the materials, you will see material properties chosen, such as Luminance and the texture file for this property, is the Photoshop psd file. It is a little bit to track down and understand but basically the layers and certain channels have been mapped to plane objects in Cinema 4D. If there is an Alpha property chosen for the material, it will map to the alpha channel of the Photoshop file.

If you take a look around using the viewport options you can see the 3D construction of your Photoshop file. If you look from the side, for example, you will see the layers staggered in Z space at the default 10 cm setting. It is very easy to build upon your Photoshop import. The very nature of how it handles this structure is its own idea of how to use and layer photographs. Using plane objects with photographs applied as materials, you can mimic this plugin behavior to create your own collage of 3D spaced images and then explore other possibilities within Cinema 4D.

Film festivals are a great way to showcase your work. They are filled with writers, directors, producers, distributors, and everyone else involved in the film industry that can help you with your future as a filmmaker. Here are the five most important film festivals for moviemakers:

1. Sundance

The Sundance Film Festival is held in the state of Utah in the United States. It is one of the biggest in the U.S., and features short films, feature length, and non-competitive showcases. Sundance attracts some of the biggest names in Hollywood, from actors to producers, and is definitely a great place to network with real industry insiders and get your film seen by people that can further your career.

2. Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival is held annually in France, and is one of the world’s oldest and most highly regarded festivals. Like Sundance, Cannes attracts the top film industry players, and also adds the European market to the mix. If your film is more of an art house project, it is more likely to shine at Cannes, where it is more about artistic quality over commercially viable films.

3. Toronto

The Toronto International Film Festival has grown to become one of the most prestigious places to screen a movie in the world. What began as a showcase for other festival winners, Toronto has earned a lot of influence and is considered a top predictor of what will be successful in Hollywood. Some of the best movies made had their premiere in Toronto, which makes it a serious contender for any filmmaker who wants to have their work seen by the top players in the industry.

4. Tribeca

Tribeca is quickly growing to become the place to show for independent films. Started in 2002 by co-founder Robert DeNiro, Tribeca is held in New York. It attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year and brings independent filmmakers of all levels together. Like with other festivals on the list, Tribeca gets maximum exposure for you and your film with top U.S. industry leaders in attendance.

5. San Francisco

The San Francisco International Film Festival is the longest running film festival in the U.S. It runs for two weeks every year, and focuses on film and video productions that haven’t yet received U.S. distribution. If you’re a filmmaker in need of distribution, this is the best festival for you, and gives you a lot of opportunities to network with the people that have the power to get your film to the masses. Attracting over 80,000 people, the San Francisco Film Festival rounds out our list of top film festivals.

In addition to these five, there are many smaller festivals that take place throughout the year in cities all across the country. Though they may not have the same cache as the events listed above, they can be a stepping stone to bigger and better screening opportunities. And you have to remember it’s not just about the awards, film festivals are a great place to network, make business deals, and rub elbows with studio executives. Each year these events bring together movie lovers from all walks of life to socialize with like-minded people that share their passion for the silver screen.

An Actor Prepares by Constantin Stanislavski is a book that teaches actors how to perform. It is an attempt to provide structure and framework to guide the acting through instruction, thought processes and exercises. The book is part of a series of works, but due to publishing delays during the second world war, many are unaware it has companion pieces. This first book delves into the psychological aspects of creating a character. An Actor Prepares and its teachings have had a profound effect on many directors and actors.

Constantin Stanislavski was a Russian actor and director. He had reputation for remaining in character when not performing, probably to rehearse for the role. This trait has been attributed to modern Method actors like James Woods. He co-founded what was to become the Moscow Art Theatre in 1897. This theatre and troupe gained acclaim performing the works of Checkov, who deliberately provided little insight to the characters. This allowed applications Stanislavski for his psychological techniques and flesh out the roles. The Moscow Art Theatre is where he taught and refined the “System”. In 1906, the first formal version of his System began to take shape. An Actor Prepares was first published in 1936.

The book itself is an imaginary diary of fictional student Kostya training under the director Tortsov. Tortsov is a stand in for Stanislavski, as he teaches the System. Kostya records the daily rehearsals and exercises Tortsov has the students in his class perform. The book indirectly teaches through these examples. For example, early on the students perform Othello and when finished Tortsov offers instruction on what they did incorrectly.

The System is what Stanislavski called his collective teachings. Within the System, you will find concepts such as emotion memory, substitution and replace if magic. These concepts are related to psychology, which at the time was a area largely unknown. Actors are encouraged to produce real emotions on stage by either recalling the personal experiences the actor has had or by using imagination to elicit the appropriate response. The actor remains in character but is himself experiencing the real emotion, thus being truthful.

Method Acting is modern, American derivative of the System. Lee Strasberg created the Method, but others such as Stella Adler have made contributions. Emotional memory, substitution and the magic if remain the main focus of Method Acting. Both Method Acting and the System incorporate exercises for the actors to complete in order to practice the necessary mental skills. The Breakfast Drink is an example of one such exercise.

Here are 5 general categories of equipment, devices or/and other apparatus to create build a home cinema:

Input Device – first things first, you need some sort of player to access your favorite movie. There are many choices – HDTV, Blu-ray, DVD player, VCD player, and you can also use your personal computer or video game systems. Of course each has its own pros and cons.

Processing Device – it usually provides a more enhanced “home cinema” experience by using standalone AV receiver/preamplifier and sound processor for complex sound formats.

Audio Output – most people are contented with 2 speakers and extra subwoofer but you can add more as you desire.

Video Output – your choices include a HDTV display, LCD TV, plasma TV, video projector, rear-projection TV or for those with tight budget, a typical CRT TV can also do the trick.

Atmosphere – the style of the chairs, movie posters, vending machine, specialized furniture, sophisticated or theatrical room interiors or any other ideas you could possibly think that will make you or your guest to actually think and feel they are inside a movie house.

Apparently, the more you want to experience a real cinematic home viewing the more it will cost you. But you don’t really have to buy very expensive devices. You can start one piece at a time. Also remember that it takes true creativity and resourcefulness to put up your very own home cinema.

The first thing you need to realize is that this desire or dream can become a reality if you’re willing to put in the time, effort, training, dedication, passion and patience required to make it. Like a famous three-word one-liner of an actor search goes: Dream, Believe, Survive.

First is the dream, or the desire to become an actor. Then comes the faith, you should believe in yourself whatever hardships you may encounter in the process. It is very rare to become an instant actor unless your family is in the business for a long time already. Then you have to survive. Survive all the hardships in trainings, all the late night and weekend workshops and endless lining up in auditions.

Look for an inspiration, one that is an actor already. Learn his style in acting and try to imitate him, then learn to act. Acting is first and foremost a craft. The best of the actors understand this and no matter how far they have come in their careers, they are constantly looking to improve upon their craft. They take classes, work with acting and dialogue workshop trainers, study life experiences, and other great actors in the field. They are very aware that learning to act is a continuous process.

Most movies that are made are in the format ratio of 16:9 that is different from the normal analogue television format of 3:4. High density television then offers the people watching the movies on them exactly what the makers of the movie intended. Digital televisions are slim others as thin as 6 inches or slimmer. HDTV offers a high quality colour and resolution (resolution is 1024 by 786 or higher) than any digital or analogue television available.

There is a wide range of high density television, they vary in brand, price and size and this makes it a bit difficult to get the perfect choice. There are three main types of these televisions namely; flat panel, rear projection and also front projection. The front projection system is relatively cheap and it produces large images, this system is good for brightly lit environments unless it is only used at night.

The HDTV home cinema comes with five speakers and a sub woofer thus the sound systems of cinema systems are in the format of 5.1 digital soundtracks; this means that the sound is usually split into five. The .1 is the sixth channel and it is reserved for the sub woofer. These sounds that are split are made in such a manner that they provide sound to all the sides. Your sitting position does not change the amount of sound that you will hear. There is another format that is rivaling the 5.1 soundtrack, which is DTS 5.1, this is generally considered the more superior in sound quality of the two and it has started being used, however not all systems are compatible with it.

Newer formats that are in are the Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES, they are in the format of 6.1 multichannel soundtrack, these formats usually utilize a rear channel which offers a more effective wrap around effects. The sound formats are so advanced that if you are watching an explosion, the walls around you will vibrate and the light will be so high that it appears as though you were in the place of the action at that time.

The terminologies and the acronyms used are used to differentiate between digital television (DTV) and High Definition television (HDTV). The major difference is that HDTV is a sub-set of the DTV and it has the highest quality digital signal and it is free of any interference that can affect a picture. DTV uses a compressed digital signal that has to be interpreted by a digital receiver.

It is agreed by experts that your television has to be at least 27 inches diagonally to be termed as a home theatre, there are televisions that are mounted on walls and can reach a diagonal length of 42 to 50 inches. By now almost all major networks use the high definition programming.

You will find that among the major components of the system are the receivers. The receivers are the screen, the speakers, and the amplifiers. Each part is an important part of the home theater.

The HD projector has genuinely transformed the dream of the home cinema into a reality. By HD I mean high definition, a term most recently applied to television signals, but just as relevant here. It is now possible to watch television, play console games or watch a movie with an enormous 92 inch image in the comfort of your own home thanks to these projectors.

The quality of HD projectors, together with their improved reliability and portability means that they are now perfectly suitable for the home. Indeed, HD projectors are now equivalent in price to the average LCD television or plasma screen. This means that you now have the option of purchasing an HD projector instead of a television.

Given that all you need is a decent sized room in which to install a projector screen the projector creating a genuine home cinema experience. Indeed HD projectors have a good chance of becoming as popular in the UK as flat screen LCD televisions have become.

Don’t be put off by the low price of HD projectors. For not much more that £500 you can purchase a good quality HD projector which is reliable and up to date and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with it. If you are willing however to spend slightly more you you might well choose one of the better quality HD projectors on the market and still see change from £1,000.

HD projectors filled with functionality and including all the latest technological breakthroughs really are available at this price. You will genuinely be surprised. It’s not very hard. By spending that little bit extra on your projector you can get the best possible results from your home cinema.

Technological advances have meant you have a choice in the selection of your projector when setting up your home cinema. First there is the LCD HD projector which we will review and then we will look at the DLP HD projector. The slight differences between them do not get in the way of them both delivering great quality. You can still get a high quality picture resolution from an LCD HD projector despite it being relatively inexpensive. If your objective is to get the best picture quality and overall most impressive performance you would be wise to select the DLP HD projector.
